WordPress vs. WP Engine: The feud explained

The WordPress ecosystem is in the middle of a heated battle between WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg and hosting provider WP Engine. The conflict centers on trademarks, open-source contributions, and user data, leaving the community divided.

How it started: In a September blog post, Mullenweg accused WP Engine of being a "cancer to WordPress," criticizing the company for disabling post revision history, a feature he views as crucial for user data protection. He also took issue with WP Engine’s use of the "WP" brand, claiming it misleads users into thinking it’s officially connected to WordPress.

Legal battle unfolds: WP Engine fired back with a cease-and-desist, accusing Mullenweg of trying to pressure them into paying for WordPress trademark usage. Automattic responded with its own cease-and-desist, alleging trademark violations and sparking a broader conversation about trademark rules in the WordPress community.

WP Engine banned: In retaliation, Mullenweg banned WP Engine from accessing WordPress.org resources, breaking plugins and themes for their customers. This left many websites vulnerable, angering the WordPress community, which felt caught in the crossfire.

Trademark fears grow: Developers are concerned that recent trademark filings by the WordPress Foundation for terms like "Managed WordPress" could further restrict the ecosystem. Many worry about the long-term implications for WordPress-related services, as the battle highlights the fine line between open-source ideals and corporate control.

The fight between WordPress and WP Engine raises tough questions about the future of open-source in the WordPress ecosystem.
